Elizabeth Margaret Chandler

Elizabeth Margaret Chandler (1807-1834) was a Quaker writer and poet who wrote on the subject of abolition and the American treatment of Native Americans. She began contributing to the "Ladies' Repository" section of the Genius of Universal Emancipation after it's editor Benjamin Lundy read her prize-winning poem "The Slave Ship". Chandler originated the abolitionist image and slogan "Am I not a Woman and a Sister", a female version of the Wedgwood design - William Lloyd Garrison later adopted the symbol for the ladies department of The Liberator.
As a member of the Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society, Chandler supported the free produce movement. She eventually moved to Michigan where she and Laura Smith Haviland formed the Logan Female Anti-Slavery Society. The organization established a main link in the Underground Railroad to Canada. Chandler died of a fever at 26.
