MR. GARRISON—I have a little incident which I must beg you to make public through the medium of your paper, particularly for the benefit of the ladies, who may perhaps wish to imitate such an excellent and laudable example.—I was present, a few weeks since, at a wedding, where the cake used on the occasion was not only made with free sugar, but on its pure white icing were mottoes written in delicate letters of green—'
I assure you, this allusion to the subject in a way so novel, yet so impressive, was a cause of pleasant surprise. There were, at the same time, secret papers or mottoes handed round to the company, being couplets on the subject of slavery, abolition, &c. Here are specimens—
'Eat this candy without fear,
No blood of slaves is mingled here.'
'If slavery comes by colors, as we see,
Fashions may change, and you the slave may be.'
With many others of like import. I hope this example may be imitated not only by my fair friends in Boston, but by my countrywomen every where. Hereafter parties may be made interesting and instructive by the means above alluded to. The subject may be brought before us in a thousand different ways—all tending to arouse our sleeping energies, and create a feeling of sympathy for the oppressed.
