Free Labor Produce--High Compliment to the Black Planters

Description

FREE LABOR PRODUCE—HIGH COMPLIMENT TO THE BLACK PLANTERS OF ST. CROIX. At this time, when the great question of the capability of free blacks to maintain themselves and successfully conduct business is more widely mooted than ever, it may not be uninteresting to mention that the cargo of sugar and molasses received at this port in the L.P. Snow, and sold by auction on Thursday last, the 29th ult., was pronounced by the company present to be in finer order and better packed than any similar cargo ever offered for sale in Boston. The product was wholly the labor of free blacks in the Island of St Croix, and brought prices which indicated its excellence—the sugar at $8 50 a $8 80 per hundred lbs., and the molasses at 881/4 a 40 1/2c per gallon. Chenery & Co. were the consignees of this cargo, and were generally felicitated upon the handsome manner in which their correspondents sent their produce to market.— Boston Transcript, June 3 d.
